Reformatting FAQ. Read after you read the page about the free livestreams.
Will you be offering blurays/dvds?
This is my goal! I am working on it.
Will the livestreams be VOD?
They will be specifically edited and curated blocks of work, both mine and other people’s, that will only be shown once. In following livestreams, I will continue to show the same work, but in different orders next to different things. Think of it like how TV used to work.
The livestreams will be a consistent way that you can see my work for free on a monthly basis. Check the schedule and figure out when you want to come based on what I am showing.
Why did you suddenly reformat everything?
I had been planning it for a while, was hesitant on it, but was inspired to take the leap during a very inspiring lecture in one of my classes.
What did your teacher say?
It's a video installation class, and we were talking about the importance of context, artistically motivated limitation, ephemeral work, moving work from one space to another, dignity, respect, and the relationship between viewer - environment - content of the work. I decided I preferred an audience that was respectful of the time and effort I put into my work rather than internet virality, and felt that strangers having immediate 24/7 access to raw art pieces that are deeply personal to me, didn't feel right, and actually had been making me feel bad for a long time. The way I had been displaying my work was detrimental to my mental health, was financially irresponsible, and put out the wrong message of how I would like people to engage with it.
Why the livestream format?
While the livestreams are free, they give me more agency and control over how people see the work, and it allows me to do other things that are interesting to me, like shout out my friends and share their work next to mine, among other things. Therefore, it becomes worth it to me on a personal level to share the work for free- because it is completely on my own terms!
Why is even your smaller work not available?
A lot of the small stuff is on this website, in the “Everything” section. The small stuff will be shown in the livestreams too. Stuff that’s not here will be shown in the livestreams.
I really loved being able to watch it whenever I wanted, so why are you doing this to me?
Unfortunately my work was not free for me to make, at all! All of my work required hundreds of thousands of dollars to make, and as a result I am in a ton of debt, and it was only made worse by the way I used to do things. Patreon only covers my rent, which I'm thankful for, but it's not sustainable the way I was doing it! So considering all of that, is it not generous that I had it up for free for as long as I was actually able? I had all of my work up for free for around 8 years, at the expense of many things.
I'm getting older and am dealing with the realities of living in America as a working artist (health problems, money problems, grad school, etc) People can say "But it meant a lot to me", but it means more to me! And the fact you saw it for free before maybe can be considered as special now. I don't know anyone on my youtube channel, and by all accounts, all that their free viewership does for me is extremely abstract, I appreciate that people love it, but the way they found out they loved it was by me exploiting myself.
My work is personal to me, it's a bunch of deeply personal raw art pieces about my feelings and life, that I poured all of myself into making. These are not neutral products with no value, I spend most of my time and money making it. It's mainly by myself with some help from my friends. I did a bunch of experiments before this to try and see what worked for me, and unfortunately nothing that was totally free did.
I also want to encourage more real life screenings of my work, which actually because all of my work was free, made it seem pointless to a lot of people, because it's like "Whats the point? Its just on Youtube!"
